La Batidora de Política — A Blender Full of Memory
Some objects stay with us, not just for how they functioned, but for what they meant. For me, this blender — la batidora— is one of those objects. It was our only blender at home in Cuba. It worked fantastically, even if it carried a few extra noises that became part of its character.
Why La Batidora
This blender is more than a kitchen tool. It is a symbol of my childhood in Cuba. My grandmother was its proud owner, and she treated it like a treasure. The blender itself came from the Soviet Union, a reminder of Cuba’s political past, but in our home it was simply part of daily life. Smoothies, juices, and countless meals began here. It was both ordinary and extraordinary, shaping family moments one spin at a time.
A swirl of voices, arguments, and contradictions —La Batidora de Política captures the constant noise of political discourse. It’s chaotic, messy, and strangely rhythmic, like a blender that never turns off. This piece reflects how politics spins through our lives, shaping us whether we want it to or not.
Crafting the Work
When I created La Batidora de Política, I wanted to capture the layers of meaning — the personal and the political, the intimate and the historical. This blender carried the weight of memory but also reflected Cuba’s resourcefulness. Many of these blenders lost their original glass jars, which Cubans often replaced with stronger aluminum versions. Ours, however, kept its glass — making it even more of a relic.
