Mi Abuela — A Portrait of Strength & Memory
There are faces that never leave us, even when time passes. For me, that face is my abuela’s. She carried the quiet strength of our family, the voice of tradition, and the embrace of unconditional love.
Why Mi Abuela
This portrait was inspired by her presence — both gentle and powerful. Growing up, I remember her stories, her laughter in the kitchen, the way she made ordinary days feel sacred. Mi Abuela is more than her likeness on paper; it is a tribute to the feeling of home she created and the roots she gave us all.
Crafting the Work
I wanted this piece to capture more than a portrait. It reflects memory, resilience, and warmth. Using layered tones and soft contrasts, I aimed to show the depth of her presence — how her influence lives on, even when she is not physically here. Each brushstroke is a reminder of her legacy.
From Cuba to TCU
This painting holds a special history. Mi Abuela was first exhibited during my BFA exhibition in 2021, a body of work that bridged my past in Cuba with my present in Texas. During that show, Texas Christian University acquired the piece for their permanent collection — a recognition that carries deep meaning for me. What began as a personal tribute to my grandmother now also lives as part of a broader dialogue about culture, heritage, and memory.

It is for anyone who carries the love of a grandmother — a quiet reminder of the generations who shaped us.
